Education begins at home

The Parasha in the everyday life - Parashat Tzav – Shabbat Hagadol - Rabbi Eliezer Shenvald - 5780

Shabbat Parshat Tzav this year is also 'Shabbat Hagadol' where we mark an important step in preparation for Passover. We seek to address the essence of Jewish 'education' that 'begins at home'. The concept of "education" is in essence related to the "inauguration of the Mishkan" חנוכת המשכן) - חינוך) in our Parasha, which took place in Nissan (according to the Sages in Rosh Chodesh Nissan).

Education is one of the founding elements of the Jewish society and family. In all generations, education begins at home. The family is busy with this challenge throughout the year, but during Passover and the Seder night it gets special emphasis. The modern age poses complex challenges for education in general and for parents in charge of the education at home. This demanding task has to be carried out in parallel with the other demanding and complex tasks they have.

These days of continuous closure, where families stay inside the homes, the educational challenge that takes place at home becomes even more complex.

At the end of the Parasha, and at the beginning of Parashat Shmini, we describe the process of inaugurating the Mishkan, which began on the seven days of reserve duty and ended on the eighth day with the establishment of the Mishkan. It says:

וַיַּקְרִ֣יבוּ הַנְּשִׂאִ֗ים אֵ֚ת חֲנֻכַּ֣ת הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ בְּי֖וֹם הִמָּשַׁ֣ח אֹת֑וֹ וַיַּקְרִ֧יבוּ הַנְּשִׂיאִ֛ם אֶת־קָרְבָּנָ֖ם לִפְנֵ֥י הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃

“The chieftains also brought the dedication offering for the altar upon its being anointed. As the chieftains were presenting their offerings before the altar” (Bamidvar 7:10)

The establishment of the Tabernacle was in the month of Nissan:

וַיְהִ֞י בַּחֹ֧דֶשׁ הָרִאשׁ֛וֹן בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ הוּקַ֖ם הַמִּשְׁכָּֽן׃

“In the first month of the second year, on the first of the month, the Tabernacle was set up”. (Shmot 40:17)

The inauguration of the house (Chanukat HaBait) also took place during the building of the first Temple by King Solomon (Kings I, 8:63). And in the construction of the Second Temple as well (Ezra 6:16).

Rashi has in some places interpreted the meaning of the term 'education':

“The word חנך signifies introducing a person or a thing, for the first time, to some particular occupation in which it is intended that he should remain (i. e. to dedicate or devote to some particular purpose). It has a similar sense in (Mishlei 22:6) “Train up (חנוך) a child”, and in (Bamidvar 7:84) חנוכת המזבח “the dedication of the altar”, and (Tehilim 30:1) “The dedication (חנוכת) of the house” In old French enseigner; English: to teach, instruct”. (Rashi Bereshit 14:14)

This is what education has in common with the Tabernacle in the Temple, and a man’s home: that in the inauguration of the house he designates the house from the beginning to its spiritual use, and in the house, the offspring will be educated with the same purpose.

Rashi associates the term 'education' with the 'reserve days' - “filling of hands”, training the priests for their future work in the Mishkan:

וּמִלֵּאתָ֥ יַֽד־אַהֲרֹ֖ן וְיַד־בָּנָֽיו׃

''You shall then ordain Aaron and his sons''.

Rashi interpreted 'by these things': Aaron’s hand and his sons’ hands in the appointment and assignment to the priesthood.

According to Rashi, this "education" was the ‘filling of hands’ by all Priests to do their job

ולמלואים. ליום חינוך הכהונה

ולמלואים And for the consecration offering- that was offered on the day that they were installed in the priestly office - for a day of education" (Vayikra 8:22).

The Passover Command was in Egypt on Rosh Chodesh Nissan:

בֶּעָשֹׂ֖ר לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ הַזֶּ֑ה וְיִקְח֣וּ לָהֶ֗ם אִ֛ישׁ שֶׂ֥ה לְבֵית־אָבֹ֖ת שֶׂ֥ה לַבָּֽיִת׃

“on the tenth of this month each of them shall take a lamb to a family, a lamb to a household” (Shmot 12:3).

בעשר לחודש הזה ויקחו להם יום שבת היה ולפי שעשו בו ישראל מצוה ראשונה כגון מקח הפסח בעשור נקרא שבת הגדול.

“on the tenth of this month, when they shall take or purchase for themselves etc.” The tenth of the month during that year was on a Sabbath. As a reminder of the fact that on that Sabbath the people collectively performed such a great commandment, it has since been named שבת הגדול, “the great Sabbath.” (Chizkuni Shmot 12:3)

And there are those who explained the name saying that a Great Miracle happened there:

שבת שלפני הפסח קורין אותו שבת הגדול והטעם לפי שנעשה בו נס גדול שפסח מצרים מקחו בעשור כדכתיב בעשור לחודש הזה ויקחו להם שה לבית אבות שה לבית ופסח שיצאו ישראל ממצרים היה ביום ה' כדאיתא בסדר עולם ונמצא שי' בחדש היה שבת ולקחו להם כל אחד שה לפסחו וקשר אותו בכרעי מטתו ושאלום המצריים למה זה לכם והשיבו לשחטו לשם פסח במצות השם עלינו והיו שיניהם קהות על ששוחטין את אלהיהן ולא היו רשאין לומר להם דבר ועל שם אותו הנס קורין אותו שבת הגדול:

The Sabbat before Pesach is called "Shabbat HaGadol" (The Great Shabbos). And the reason is because a miracle occurred during the Exodus from Egypt. On the 10th [they took a sheep] as it says: "On the tenth of this month you shall take for yourselves a sheep into your homes."

And the year that the Exodus took place was on a Thursday as we see in Seder Olam, and therefore the "10th of the month" was Shabbat, and [on that Shabbat] every Jew took a sheep as a Paschal offering and tied it to their bedposts. And the Egyptians asked them "Why is this so [why do you have a sheep (the Egyptian god) tied to your bed]?" And they responded: "To slaughter for a Pesach offering for HaShem." And they got upset that they were going to slaughter their gods, but they could not say anything due to the miracle. And thus, it is called Shabbat HaGadol”. (Tur Orach Chaim 430)

The commandment for a Passover sacrifice, is addressed to the home and the family as one unit:

שה לבית אבת. לְמִשְׁפָּחָה אַחַת; הֲרֵי שֶׁהָיוּ מְרֻבִּין, יָכוֹל שֶׂה אֶחָד לְכֻלָּן? תַּ"לֹ "שֶׂה לַבָּיִת".

" a lamb for one family (“family” here means the larger unit comprising the father or grandfather with his married sons and their families). Consequently, if they (the members of such a family) were numerous, one might think that they may take one lamb for all of them (irrespective of whether this would suffice to provide a piece as large as an olive, the minimum quantity, for each person)!" (Rashi ibid). From this, the Sages learned that the whole family is counted under one of the sacrifices and the commandment of eating applies also to the little ones in the family.

While eating the Passover on Seder night, many educational foundations are also fulfilled: The Mitzvah of וְהִגַּדְתָּ֣ לְבִנְך “And you shall explain to your son”.

The very story of the Exodus is the root of faith and Judaism, conveyed from "fathers to their sons". The mitzvah is precisely for the fathers and the parents because they are the basis of education not only in what they say but mainly in the way they implement things and set an example for their sons: 'Education begins at home'.

At night, there is also a tutorial on how to adapt the educational message to the boys' ability to absorb - "to each son's way," and “corresponding to four sons did the Torah speak". And to every son it should be told according to his ability to understand. And changes must be made to encourage the boys to ask, so that they will want to get an answer. (Rambam).

Seder night is supposed to be a significant spiritual educational night that will radiate throughout the year.

Family building and children’s education in the modern age presents a great challenge to parents. In these days of closure and convergence of the nuclear family at home, parents face a more complex challenge. On the one hand, it may be a focus for friction and tension, and on the other, it creates exposure and a shared stay that creates an opportunity for deep educational action.
